Mother's Day - Year Three

Mother's Day is this weekend. It's still always a struggle, and I know too many woman who deal with infertility, or are trying to adopt, or their mom's have died, or they're estranged from their children. It's not a straightforward holiday (are any of them?).

When a friend shared this link on fb, I had to share, because it's such a beautiful way to "acknowledge the continuum of mothering". So, I'm wishing you all support and and appreciation, and in hoping you know your worth this weekend, despite the difficulties that face you. Much love to you all.

This is an excerpt, and for the full post, please visit From the Messy Middle: An Open Letter to Pastors (A non-mom speaks about Mother's Day) If you re-share, please be sure to share a link to the Messy Middle to give proper credit. Thank you.

  • To those who gave birth this year to their first child—we celebrate with you
  • To those who lost a child this year – we mourn with you
  • To those who are in the trenches with little ones every day and wear the badge of food stains – we appreciate you
  • To those who experienced loss this year through miscarriage, failed adoptions, or running away—we mourn with you
  • To those who walk the hard path of infertility, fraught with pokes, prods, tears, and disappointment – we walk with you. Forgive us when we say foolish things. We don’t mean to make this harder than it is.
  • To those who are foster moms, mentor moms, and spiritual moms – we need you
  • To those who have warm and close relationships with your children – we celebrate with you
  • To those who have disappointment, heart ache, and distance with your children – we sit with you
  • To those who lost their mothers this year – we grieve with you
  • To those who experienced abuse at the hands of your own mother – we acknowledge your experience
  • To those who lived through driving tests, medical tests, and the overall testing of motherhood – we are better for having you in our midst
  • To those who will have emptier nests in the upcoming year – we grieve and rejoice with you
  • And to those who are pregnant with new life, both expected and surprising –we anticipate with you
  • This Mother’s Day, we walk with you. Mothering is not for the faint of heart and we have real warriors in our midst. We remember you.

Mother's Day

(Let's see how many posts I can do in one day...?)

Local headline I just saw: Moms are free at "______ County Zoo - they get free admission on Mother's Day, May 9, 2010, when they're accompanied by a paying child.

*grumble grumble* Once again, that feeling of being left behind.

As a fellow babylost mom put it, "It’s a day that everyone around me gets flowers and brunch and a day off from household chores because they have living, breathing children."

In the wee hours of Sunday morning, I'm boarding a train to Chicago. I won't have to see any commercials about Mother's Day. I get to avoid all the hype in the mall, or in church. I'll just be hoping not to cry too much.

And for a good week, I won't be updating this blog. I will be doing art though, and will update upon my return.
