New Year, New Goals

2013 rolled in while my husband was puking his guts up. Not the most impressive start to the new year. My first goal for the year, was to not get the flu bug.

I don't believe in setting goals based purely on the calendar. I think it's a great time to do it, but I wouldn't limit myself to only setting them only at that one time. I think it's important to do a check every 3 to 6 months to see if I'm progressing on the paths to the goals I've set. Or if I've veered off and ended stalling out on them. Goals can be changed. Living life is more important than checking something off of a list. Not everyone is a goal oriented mind. Do what is best for yourself.

Saying all that, I will reiterate that I'm a very goal oriented person. So, without further ado, here are some of my goals that I accomplished this last year, and some I've set for this coming year. Please know that I have a large list of goals that didn't happen either...

2012:
I read 21 books.
I started working out in February. Running in June. And by the end of the year I had 775 miles from biking, running and walking.
In an attempt to live more simply and contentedly, starting last May I haven't bought any new clothes, or makeup. This continues through May 2013. (I did buy 2 clothes items second hand)
I tried to live in the moment with Simon, and not just wish he'd go off and play by himself so I could get things done.

2013:
Run my first 10k and half marathon by May (10k planned in February, and half planned in May).
Get strong enough to do pullups.
Get my next tattoo.
Read 10 books.
Paint a giant watercolor. I have paper for it already...22x14 or something similar.
Draw more.
Go camping this summer as a family.

Friends, I hope you are having a good start to this new year. And that this year holds more happiness than sadness for you. Sending love.

  1. Love to you. Good goals. I like that live more simply and contentedly without buying clothes and make-up. I am terrible about clothes, particularly second hand ones. I'm trying this year to do the same thing. Actually, to not buy anything extraneous, including art supplies, and try to create from what I have already in my studio. But I do like making new year's goals. It's nice after the holidays, when all my normal routines seem hanging in suspended animation, to reevaluate how I was living before, and adopt new rituals, habits and set some goals.

  2. It's good to reflect back on a year and see what we have accomplished. Sometimes January rolls around and we feel pressured into having this crazy resolutions. Living simply, I like that. Marathon running, good for you! I try and set or re-set goals that are easily attainable so that I can get myself going. Then I set the bar higher in a few months, then a little higher....

  4. I agree with you about the check in. I look at the start of the year as a time to assess where I am and what I want to change. I tend to identify areas of focus rather than having strict goals. My birthday is in June, so it works out as a nice follow up check in, a time to see how I'm going with my goals/focus areas, to recommit to them or to adjust them as necessary.

And wow! on the running. I was probably ready to run a 10K in the fall, but haven't run in months. I'm trying to be more active but acknowledge that I'm probably not going to start running until March or so—too slippery and when I'm out of shape I have a lot of trouble breathing in the cold. Did go snowshoeing yesterday. Damn, now I want to go running.

As part of living more simply, I'm trying to let go of stuff we don't need and move it along to people who could get use from it. Part of my problem is I hate shopping so I take far too many hand-me downs and I'm not judicious about what we end up keeping. I love finding what I need in our closets/attic/barn, but it makes me hold on to things sometimes that should just go. (And now I want to go clean my office and closets).

  5. Sounds great! Love your goals for this year. Being in the moment with our little ones, makes so much sense and yet is so hard to do! I try that, especially lately as he is growing up so fast.
Nice job on last year's goals and accomplishments ... especially the miles! wow! i have to say I don't buy much make up or clothing, but feel I should probably buy a bit more. Having ONE pair of jeans that fit me (post pregnancy) ... well, it gets old wearing and washing and wearing and washing the same pair all week. I look at my old clothes and realize there is no way my hips are going back to a size 0. I need to go shopping ... just a little bit.
I have not made official goals but am trying to work out 3 times a week and eat healthier. Less dessert. More exercise. I remind myself that some, even a little, is better than none.
Oh to read! I've been on the same book for months! I hit the bed a fall asleep!
I would like to aim to find more time to create this year. I miss art and crafting.
    Good luck!

  6. These are great goals. 1/2 marathons are my favorite distance. Good luck with that. I am totally impressed in no purchasing of clothes. Do underware count???
Why did you book number decrease?
    Wondering about that tattoo.
I used to be able to do 15 pullups. I wonder if I could do any now???
    Hugs

  7. Great goals. They sound just perfect. I'll be checking on your running progress--the half is my favorite, too! Well, actually 15K but those are limited availability, so . . . nevermind.

Anyway. Happy New Year, a little bit late. 2013 has kicked us in the butt a little, so I'm just now catching up.
    xo
